Also via AP: "The storm was once Hurricane Sandy but combined with two wintry systems to become a huge hybrid storm whose center smashed ashore late Monday in New Jersey. New York City was perfectly positioned to absorb the worst of its storm surge — a record 13 feet." -
Associated Press reporting this morning from New York City: "Water lapped over the seawall in Battery Park City, flooding rail yards, subway tracks, tunnels and roads. Rescue workers floated bright orange rafts down flooded downtown streets, while police officers rolled slowly down the street with loudspeakers telling people to go home." -
Just a quick update on Super Storm Sandy and Canada. If you haven't already, read my colleague Oliver Moore's update about power outages in Toronto - and one death reported: www.theglobeandmail.com
As his update points out: the high winds warning has ended for most of southern Ontario, although in Sarnia gusts reported of up to 100 kmh.
Also Superstorm Sandy having an impact on Quebec and the Maritimes - as the weather storm moves north. Mainly, it will be high winds and driving rain. -

-
Okay, lots of more details, updates and pictures to come. But here is the big picture: Superstorm Sandy is moving hit shore yesterday evening - with New York City and New Jersey bearing the brunt. In NYC: a record water surge of nearly 14 feet has caused flooding and power outages. In New Jersey: similar story. The impact in the U.S. extends to several states - all along the east coast and inland.
Superstorm Sandy continues churning away - moving west of Philadelphia just hours ago; its path expected to turn north towards Canada. -

Update on levee break this morning in New Jersey (via Associated Press):
Authorities have launched a rescue effort after a broken levee flooded a small northern New Jersey town early Tuesday.
Moonachie Police Sgt. Tom Schmidt says the levee broke and left about 5 feet of water in the streets within 45 minutes. The police and fire departments are flooded. Officials are using boats to try to rescue about 800 people living in a trailer park. There are no reports of injuries or deaths. -
Two tweets from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who is making the round on network TV:
@GovChristie New Jersey is a tough place. We will dig out from under and we will be back. #Sandy

Just a quick update on the presidential election - yes, that other news story that is now second to Sandy: both presidential candidates have been cancelling campaign events - and effectively things are on pause today.
Mitt Romney was scheduled to hold two rallies in Ohio today – one in Lima and another in Kettering. The campaign announced on Monday that both rallies would be canceled in light of Hurricane Sandy.
President Barack Obama’s Colorado Springs, Colo., rally scheduled today was cancelled over the weekend in anticipation of having to be in Washington, D.C., to monitor Hurricane Sandy.
On Monday afternoon, the Obama campaign announced that a Tuesday rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, would also be cancelled. Instead, the president would spend the day in Washington, D.C. -
