Live blog: Tracking Superstorm Sandy and its aftermath

  • Millions of Americans on the east coast have spent a difficult night - without power and facing evacuations - as Hurricane Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City, New Jersey, around 8 p.m. EDT

As the sun rises, the aftermath of what is now being called Superstorm Sandy will become clearer. But here is what we can report so far: at least 38 dead; more than 7.5 million without power; fires reported in the borough of Queens in New York City; and a breached levee in New Jersey that required first-responders to rescue people from their roofs.

President Barack Obama has declared New York and Long Island a "major disaster."

In Canada: high winds in Toronto resulted in one death.

Stay with us throughout the morning as we provide the latest updates, pictures and comments via social media.
