Live coverage: Toronto city council debates changing how TTC is run

Globe reporters cover the council debate live from city hall

  • Welcome to The Globe and Mail's live coverage of the city council debate on the fate of the Toronto Transit Commission.

City hall bureau chief Kelly Grant, reporter Elizabeth Church and columnist Marcus Gee were at the council meeting. I'm the news community editor.

At stake was who controls the TTC, which will affect how transit is planned and run in the city. Karen Stintz's proposal ultimately won the day, by a vote of 29 to 15, and the new TTC board will be composed of seven councillors and four citizens.

Previously, the board was nine councillors, five of whom were loyal to Mayor Rob Ford. On Sunday, Mr. Ford endorsed a proposal that would see the TTC controlled by a board of seven to 11 citizens and no councillors.

This comes just a few weeks after a dramatic special council meeting that saw Ms. Stintz convince a majority of council to rebel against Mr. Ford and reinstate a light-rail transit plan he had cancelled in 2010.
